Dos and Do NotsWhen Supporting Couples Going Through Infertility Treatment
The World Health Organization states that:
Around 17.5% of the adult population — roughly 1 in 6 worldwide — experience infertility.
I was one of the 17.5% of the “adult population.” Or was it my husband? Or were we both? To this day, our diagnosis has been “unexplained infertility.” But that’s beside the point. The fact is, as the percentage of those facing infertility is high — and if you ask me, likely on the rise — you might run into people facing it.
During my 4-year journey, many other couples were going through infertility, so these Dos and don’ts go beyond my personal experience, but they are not based on broad research.
This is a non-exhaustive list, and I would welcome other individuals who have faced infertility to challenge or add to it:
Do:
- Ask how the couple or person is feeling about going through the fertility treatment if the couple has shared they are going through it.
- Ask if you can support them in any way.
- Share success stories of people getting pregnant with fertility treatments.
- Mention you went through fertility…
